Some DSL Broadband Definitions

Often too many people get confused with all the definitions, here we have explained in easy to understand terms.

ADSL:
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - asymmetric meaning it's faster downstream than upstream.

ASAM:
Advanced Services Access Manager -Whether you have a DSLAM or ASAM in your exchange doesn't really matter. They do the same thing. See DSLAM's as well.

ATM:
Asynchronous Transfer Mode - a method of encapsulation which is capable of many virtual circuits. With these, providers (ISP's) can split an ATM connection (155Mbit or 622Mbit) up into many connections. ATM isn't just used for DSL but in the case of DSL it's used to provision each customer.

Contention Ratios:
A contention ratio is the number of users to xMbit of bandwidth. For example some providers offer 2Mbit DSL, with a ratio of 50:1, meaning 50 users to 1Mbit of bandwidth.

CPE:
Customer Premises Equipment, the term that describes the equipment used on the customer end of a connection, for example your DSL modem/router or cable modem.

DSL:
Digital Subscriber Line.

DSLAM:
Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer ?They are placed in DSL enabled Telecomm exchanges, when your modem syncs up and the DSL light comes on, it means you are connected. When data travels down your connection, it goes from the CPE -> DSLAM -> RAN -> ISP

ERX:
Edge Routing Exchange. See RAN.

IPNet:
Telecommunications backhaul networks for carrying traffic from the customer to the ISP, i.e. carrying traffic from RAN's to ISP's.

Ping or Latency:
A ping measures the time in milliseconds that it takes for a packet to travel from your computer to a remote computer and back to you again. Just because you can't ping a given host, quite a lot of providers are beginning to filter ICMP (pings come under this protocol) traffic because it is commonly used to attack hosts and wastes a lot of bandwidth. Many providers also give low priority to ping (ICMP) traffic which may mean your ping at a command line isn't very good, but in say a game, things may be fine.

RAN:
Regional Access Node These aggregates many DSLAM's connections and then feed the data to an ISP

RTT
Round Trip Time - the time it takes in milliseconds for a packet to go from A to B and back again. See ping.

SDSL
Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line - symmetrical meaning the same speed up and down.

Units

There is a major difference between UPPER and lowercase

MB = MegaBytes
Mb = Megabits
kB = KiloBytes
kb = Kilobits

MB/s = MegaBytes per second
Mb/s = Megabits per second
kB/s = KiloBytes per second
kb/s = Kilobits per second

There is 8bits to a Byte, 8kb = 1kB

1Meg connections only transfer at 128kB/sec or an 8Mb connection only transfers at 1024kB/sec or 1MB/s

A study published by the Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) has revealed that a mere 4.3% of customers is rural areas get a download speed of over 4Mbps, compared to 30% of customers in towns and cities. The report also uncovered some other disappointing figures, with regards to rural access to ATM's, banks and Post Offices. As around a fifth of the UK's population live outside of towns an cities, its surprising that less than 10% of the UK's ATM's can be found in such location's.

According to the report, many rural residences have to travel just over a mile before they will reach a Post office, and around 2.5 miles for an ATM, bank or building society!

Even though broadband speeds are fairly disappointing for people "out in the sticks", it's not a matter that isn't being addressed. The findings of the report have urged the private sector to better cooperate and understand the needs of the rural residence. One example of this is plans put forward by the British Bankers' Association to make available more ATM's and so-called 'mobile banks' in rural areas over the coming years.

This isn't the Cosmo magazine kind of hotspot; it's the other kind you may be hearing about: the Broadband hotspot. They seem to be everywhere, you can sip a latte in Starbucks while browsing the net, or have a pint at the pub while you delete annoying emails from your mother But these little hotspots, once just covering a pub or a caf here or there, are growing bigger. Just last year the River Thames in London was made into a gigantic broadband hotspot that stretches for 22km from the Millennium dome to the Houses of Parliament. Anyone on the river or its banks can now whip out a laptop and start browsing. Bored of the view from the millennium wheel? Watch that hilarious video of a woman falling over on Youtube instead.

The River Thames hotspot works by mesh networking 100 access points, allowing users to connect to the net without interruption as they travel down the river. It comes at a cost, even if fairly inexpensive, and anyone with a wireless enabled device can connect for 2.95 for an hour, 5.95 for a day or just get a whole month for 9.95.

This gigantic hotspot seems insignificant however in comparison with the one being developed in Taipei, capital of Taiwan. Taipei has been engaged in a huge infrastructure upgrade that will be the foundation of a city wide broadband hotspot that will literally turn the city into one great bit hotspot. However the best laid plans for this city wide project have not gone as well as hoped, with only 30,000 or so subscribers to the service, far less than anticipated. This is partly due to a perceived unreliability in the network as well as abundantly available free hotspots in cafes and other such places within the city.

However while it may take a while for the city wide hotspot to catch on, it does seem like these gigantic wireless projects will be the way of the future. The growing integration of high speed internet into every aspect of our lives makes it inevitable that the infrastructure will be utilised - if not now then soon. Like many new technologies the factor seems to be cost- how many people will really want to pay to use the internet for a hour while they travel between a work and home where it is already paid for. How many people are really that anxious to be online at all times? When the costs match the needs is when we will start to see the full potential of such grand schemes.

It seems like these days every major telecommunications company is offering some sort of bundled service package. Typically this is a way of marketing telecommunications services to private consumers in such a way that two or more services are invoiced on the same bill and the consumer is often given a major discount in exchange for entrusting that particular company with extra business. Generally, bundling services like this is a good idea for both you as a consumer and the company that's providing the services for you. You get great convenience and savings and the company gets more business.

Despite the apparent benefits of bundled services, there are some pitfalls that you could experience if you don't shop around carefully. On the other hand, you can avoid many of the pitfalls completely by choosing a higher quality company to provide you with your telecommunications needs.

One of the major pitfalls that you could encounter is the possibility of getting a bundled service package from a company that outsources one or more of the services that you've signed up for to another company. This is extremely common among satellite TV companies and traditional phone companies. That's because phone companies are decidedly ill equipped to provide TV and satellite TV companies are similarly ill equipped to handle phone services. Neither are particularly good at providing Internet service either. For example, when you sign up for a satellite TV service that can theoretically be bundled with a home phone calling plan and a high speed Internet connection, you're probably getting the phone service from a traditional telephone company (with all of the expense and frustration that goes with it).

The high speed Internet service will either come from the same phone company in the form of DSL or through a satellite Internet company. Neither of these options is particularly good because DSL tends to be relatively slow and satellite Internet service is both slow and expensive. Plus, as if to add insult to injury, the satellite Internet service also comes with a built in time lag which makes it impossible to use with real time applications like multi player video games, VoIP, and video conferencing!

The difference between this type of bundled package and the one that's provided by cable is that cable company uses digital cable technology instead of the pie in the sky technology of satellites and the archaic technology of phone lines. Digital cable technology is able to do at least as good of a job of providing TV service as satellite TV and with the implementation of new technology, it will likely be significantly better than satellite in the near future. Digital cable technology also does a better job of providing Internet access in terms of speed, response time, and value. Broad band high speed cable Internet access has about four times the speed that DSL or satellite are capable of and doesn't have the time lag of satellite. A cable based Internet connection is also a much better value than either of the others because, despite its greater speed, it doesn't cost any more than the typical DSL service and only costs about half of the monthly rate for satellite.

The most costly portion of any point to point data connection is the local loop, commonly referred to as the last mile? A local loop provided by the local exchange carrier (LEC) is a tariffed product that does not mirror current market rates. For many years, the LEC used commercial services to subsidize a mandate to provide services to all residential customers.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 created competition to provide local loops to business customers. New companies commonly referred to as competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) began to overbuild fiber networks to provide the last mile to business customers. The CLECs were not burdened with the requirement of providing service to all residential customers and therefore were able to provide aggressive prices for last mile connections.

The collapse of the telecom industry at the turn of the last century forced many of the early CLECs into bankruptcy. The fiber networks they built, however, are still in service. The trick is to know where to find them and understand how to leverage them. Finding alternative last mile providers is a combination of good detective work, tribal knowledge and creativity.

The first step in finding an alternative local loop provider is to determine what network providers have service to your building. If an alternative provider is already servicing customers in your location then you should be able to acquire a local loop for a fraction of the cost of one provided by the LEC. This is where the detective work comes into play. You can start by asking neighbors who provides their telecommunications service.

If there are no known alternative local loop providers in your building the next step is to determine which providers have network within 1000 feet of your location. Will Fractional T1 Solve This Problem

Here's the picture you're looking at:

You have a small business....with less than 10 employees....who are all hooked into a router attached to a DSL modem.

You all need to be logged into an online database through the internet all day. You and your staff access the database to do lots of data entry as well as uploading of files. When all of you are logged in, the upload/download speed frequently is incredibly slow.

When you run DSL speed tests on any of your office machines, it shows around 1.1 mbps in the morning. By mid-afternoon, the speeds are down to 600 kbps on most of the machines. You've even seen them as low as 350 kbps.

Would a Fractional T1 solve this problem? Fractional T1s in your area run around $290/month. You don't believe a standard internet 1.5mbps T1 line is really affordable for you at $399/month. (Dollar figures are just an example for purposes of this article).

Well.....here's your answer:

Reliability, dependability, and fitness for a particular purpose have more to do with the shared nature of the services that you are using than they do with "speed". DSL is a shared resource service. Shared means that many customers are sharing an underlying internet backbone connection....that's why your speeds drop during the day ... more users are watching music videos from home in the afternoon than during the morning, sucking up all the provider's bandwidth. If the "fractional T1" provider will also be sharing their connection to the internet backbone with many of their customers, then you will likely find the same thing at the new carrier, though the busy times would be different.

The provider offering you a "T1" for $399/month is also likely sharing their backbone connection.

Remember that a shared service provider will measure speed from his office to your office, and not guarantee throughput to the internet backbone. If the shared provider has a 45M connection, and he sells 30 customers a 1.5M connection, what happens to the 31st customer? A shared provider will plop him on the same connection. Same thing with the 32nd customer, and the 33rd customer, and that's where speed problems arise.

What you need is a dedicated connection to the internet backbone, where you have your own slice of bandwidth that is not shared with other users. You say you can't afford $399. That's $20/day. That's one hour of a decent employee. What you can't afford is problems with your internet circuit, and shared connections are causing you problems.

However....before changing out the network facility and rushing to more bandwidth, first give the current carrier the chance to troubleshoot what might be broken!

You know what it's like, another day, another commute to work, another set of roadworks somewhere along the way. Chances are they're probably working on the telecoms cables beneath the surface.

However, the idea of running a fibre-optic network beneath the surface could soon come into practice.

Fibre-optic cables transmit data using light pulses down glass or plastic fibres - which are not prone to outside interference, and could therefore help deliver ultra-fast broadband across the UK.

Such cabling networks are already being implemented in Japan, but also in some cities - such as Paris - making use of vast sewer systems in order to deliver high-speed broadband connections through fibre-optic cabling to homes and businesses.

With a sewer network of over 360,000 miles existing in the UK, the idea of threading cables through underground pipes in order to help deliver high-speed broadband services may sound far-fetched, but it could soon become a reality.

A networking firm in Wales are currently in talks with several councils about the possibility of laying fibre-optic cables - which could potentially lead to faster broadband services becoming available, whilst eliminating the need to spend time and money digging up the roads.

Universities in Aberdeen, Bournemouth and Bath have been used to trial such methods of cabling on a small scale. However the firm have been negotiating with councils and water boards to try and strike a deal which could see fibre-optic cabling being laid over wider areas.

Cables would lie up to five metres below the surface, and as fibre optic cabling is believed to be less prone to erosion and rust, it could prove to be the next phase in delivering ultra-fast broadband connections across the UK.

Just got your Zune player and wondered how to download music to Zune. Well, it is actually pretty easy particularly if you already own other types of mp3 players such as the iPod.

To download music to Zune is pretty similar to the iPod. However instead of using itunes software, we use the windows media player. If you want to rip CD and download music to your Zune, all you need to do is place your CD into your computer. Open windows media player. Select Your CD and a list of songs should appear.

Select the songs you want and click on the Rip button or you can right-click and the option should appear. The ripped songs should appear in your windows media player library. Next, plug in your Zune via the USB cable. By default settings, the Zune player will automatically synchronize with the media library and download all songs to the Zune player.

If it does not synchronize properly, you may need to manually copy the music files to the Zune player. It will show up usually as a removable drive on your computer. Usually it is E drive but will depend on your computer configuration.

Do note that the Zune player only plays windows media player supported formats such as WMA, WMV, MP3, MP4 and MOV. It will not support RM (Realmedia) or DIVX format so make sure you select the correct music format when ripping CD.

The other way to download music to your Zune player is to purchase it from a web store. Examples are itunes and Napster. Microsoft has also set a Zune marketplace where there are more than 2 million soundtracks you can purchase and download. The prices ranges from $0.99 to $2.49 each.

What is a T1?

A T1 is a high-speed digital circuit that can be used for voice, data or both. The T1 transmits at a high speed, up to 1.544 Mbps, which is faster than many modems. The T1 consists of 24 channels and is typically used for businesses. The circuit is delivered on fiber but can sometimes come to the premise on copper wires. It is engineered to provide the proper speed and performance based on your location and proximity to the nearest telephone central office.

How does a T1 work?

A T1 is an engineered circuit that is connected specifically for your company location. It uses 3 pair of fiber for connection. The circuit comes into your premise and is terminated onto a smart jack. From there it can be extended into your telephone system.

A T1 has 24 channels that are flexible for use by everyone. When a channel is idle it is available. This makes the T1 able to be used by many people. A typical T1 can support between 50 and 100 users. The T1 is accessed by your telephone system through specific programming instructions that are written into your system. When a long distance number is dialed the telephone system will route the call over the T1.

A T1 can be used for both incoming and outgoing calls. Your main number can be routed over the T1 to allow for more simultaneous calls. DIDs (direct inward dial) numbers can be used on a T1. DIDs are direct numbers that can be associated with specific phone users on your system and act as private lines.

Who can use a T1?

T1 circuits are typically engineered for business applications only since they provide such a large amount of channels that can be used for both voice and data. While DSL connections were considered the standard connection in the 1990's, the T1 is a more reliable and faster connection, which is becoming the modern standard for businesses in the 21st century.

A T1 is an affordable solution for most small to mid-sized businesses. There are one-time installation costs to consider, however, these costs are easily made up in the substantial cost savings that you will get during the first year in service. There are many T1 providers to choose from. Some areas require the use of a CSU (customer service unit) with the T1. This provides a test point, which can be used to fix any problems if they occur.

So I was surprised Streamyx find out, the iPod touch upgrade Streamyx 20$. I mean, isn't that the worse idea ever? I paid for my iPod touch, just like anyone else, why should I have Streamyx Streamyx for it to be up to date.

The worse part of it, is that anybody buying a Streamyx iPod touch as of now, will get the new applications for free, which are basically what the upgrade is for. These new applications are: Maps, Mail, Stocks, Notes and Weather.

The good news, is that if Streamyx have what they call a jailbroken iPod, you will be able to get these applications for Streamyx Yay!

So how are you going to do Streamyx First, you have to put Streamyx Streamyx in 1.1.1. If you are in 1.2.1, you are going to have to Streamyx To find out if you have the right firmware go into "settings" and click on "about" then you'll see wat firmware you have. Here are the simple steps to do so:

1. Download the 1.1.1 firmware

2. Once downloaded set your itouch into recovery mode (see below)

3. Streamyx shift and click restore(go into itunes)

4. Double click the 1.1.1 file you downloaded

5. Wait, once Streamyx done working, you should have the right firware.

7. Now you can jailbreak and Streamyx iphone apps (just use my instructions)

For recovery Mode

1. Have your itouch on and connected into your computer

2. hold both the sleep home button

3. When you see the apple let go of the sleep button

4. Then you'll see your iPod touch will Streamyx you to hook it up to your computer.

Once you are in the right firmware and have validated it. You are going to go on jailbreakme.com, download and install appsnap. Let appsnap work and then go into install and install the following apps : openssh, bsd system, launcher.

You will then be able to install the applications you want on your jailbroken iPod.

Bandwidth 101 - Understanding Loop - Port - And More

If your price quotes Wireless Streamyx wildly, most likely you are running up against the "shared" vs "dedicated" issue. a "dedicated" connection (usually quoted by Tier I providers like AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Qwest, Savvis) will get you the full bandwidth to the internet backbone. A "shared" connection will get you full bandwidth to the Streamyx interface point, from which they buy a big connection to their Tier I carrier.

An example, they buy a T3 (aka DS3) which consists of 28 T1 connections. Then they Streamyx 60 T1 connections, recognizing that not all users will be requiring their full bandwidth at any particular time. Kind of like the old AOL issues of them having 1 modem for every 12 customers, and then having to buy more modems as customers complained about busy signals.

The issue of "shared" connections is a lively issue. You might trek over to the BroadbandReports.com forum for Wireless Internet Providers where you will see several discussions about Streamyx many customers can be supported by a link of a certain size.

If you are hosting a web site at your location, or if you are running a real time application and need absolute time sensitive responses to your internet queries, then you want to pony up to pay for the dedicated connection.

The Current iPod Lineup

A Little History on iPod

Another common error using ping is that the results of just a few ping tests are indicative of the condition of a data path.
